Hi ,

Rigid, the skeleton of habit alone upholds the human frame.
— Virginia Woolf

This is the time of year when we contemplate making changes in our lives. For many, these changes involve diets and gyms. Unfortunately, most people start these changes in the New Year with a big burst of enthusiasm and are usually done by February. Gyms report by Valentine’s Day, the crowd has cleared and only the dedicated regulars remain.

Before you rush off this January to start the latest cleanse or diet, ask yourself these questions.

  1. Have you ever found sustainable results from any diet or cleanse?
  2. Have they ever addressed the deeper reasons for your overeating?
  3. Have they taught you stress management, ways to cope with your feelings and emotions, or how to deal with your impulses, cravings and binges?
  4. If they haven’t, why do you continue to set yourself up for failure?

Emotional eating is the number one reason most people fail on diets. The other reason is the diet itself sets you up on a diet, binge/overeat, diet cycle that can last for years. And since most people don’t ever lose the weight they gain in these cycles, the longer they stay on the dieting roller coaster, the fatter they get.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to get off the dieting yo-yo rollercoaster and begin to learn how to eat intuitively and mindfully. Dieting is an external system full of rules.

Mindfulness is about become more inner focused and aligned with your inner wisdom. In this way, you learn to honor your body’s signals and needs and you begin to live in alignment with your own body's rhythms and cycles.

Most women use food as a stop-gap measure to fill a variety of needs and to deal with the stress in their lives. Dieting doesn't address this and when you engage in emotional eating, you break the diet and it leaves you feeling like your weak and have no willpower.

The problem is that it has never been about willpower. When you begin to address your deeper emotional needs and engage in good self-care routine, food begins to lose its power over you. Eating well becomes easier because you are no longer feeling deprived.

When you begin to feel full and nourished on the inside, eating can take its rightful place in your life, as a way to nourish your body and as a source of true pleasure, one that you can truly enjoy without guilt or shame.

If you're ready to break out of the self-defeating cycle of yo-yo dieting, my How You do Food is How You do Life Group Coaching Program begins Jan. 4th!

So what do I mean by the phrase "How you do food is how you do life ®?"

People who overeat often don't realize that their issue with food and weight isn't the real problem. It's only a symptom - a symptom of how they are living their life.

If your life is stressful, then you will turn to food to cope with that stress. If your life lacks pleasure and excitement, you will turn to food looking for pleasure and excitement. If you try to control and restrict your food, you will become obsessed with food. You eat how you are. When you're at peace with yourself, you become at peace with food. How you do food is how you do life! ®

Remember, the only way to get different results, is by doing something different.

Instead of making more New Year's resolutions that peter out quickly, resolve to get at your issue once and for all.
