We're already into the fourth week of January and many of us have already abandoned our New Year’s resolutions.

How about you? Do you start out all enthused about a weight loss program only to peter out in a few days or a couple of weeks? This is the honeymoon phase. The best way to eliminate this phenomenon is to accept that weight loss, lifestyle, and/or behavior change is a day to day process that requires consistent action, time, and patience.

Instead of getting overly focused on fast results and your end goal, focus on the daily process. Ask: "What can I realistically do each day on a consistent basis?" When you show up consistently for the process, your weight and life will change.




A big part of the process of change involves learning to reframe mistakes and failure. Many of us expect ourselves to do things perfectly. We don’t allow ourselves the time to be in the learning curve where it’s only natural to make mistakes and to stumble and fall. What we say to ourselves when we make mistakes can make the difference between success and failure.

If after making a mistake you tell yourself, “Oh, what’s the use, it’s hopeless anyway,” that pretty much guarantees your failure.Next time you make a mistake or hit an obstacle, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” Or, “How can I do better next time?”

These questions are empowering and lead not to despair but to learning and finding solutions.
