A new year is upon us and many of us are thinking of making life changes. As a coach, I see a lot of people who try to make grand sweeping changes and because it’s too much for them, quit after a few weeks. It’s much more effective to start with some small changes, get comfortable with those, and then add some more. All these small changes add up to big results.
Even choosing 1 or 2 on this list can change the quality of your life.
- Eat more fruits and vegetables. It’s easier to eat less when you fill up on more whole foods.
- Cut out the fattening coffee drinks and drink tea and/or more water.
- Stop buying the chips and junky snacks and replace with healthy alternatives.
- Buy some house plants or buy yourself fresh cut flowers a few times a month. House plants help to clean the air and fresh flowers brighten your house and lift your spirits.
- Take a nature break every day, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Being out in nature clears your mind and lifts your spirits.
- Go to sleep earlier. Most of us could use some extra sleep. When you do this, you can then wake up earlier.
- Get up a half an hour to an hour earlier. Before your world gets hectic, use this time for yourself. Meditate, do yoga, read inspirational writing, journal, go to the gym, etc. Spend some time in the morning reviewing your goals for the day and visualize yourself accomplishing your goals.
- Schedule something social or fun for yourself at least once a week. Most of my clients are pleasure deprived. All work and no play leads to turning to food or shopping for pleasure.
- Make time for your hobbies on a regular basis. If you don’t have a hobby, spend time exploring things that might become one. Hobbies are great stress relievers and bring peace and joy to your life.
- Let go of toxic or draining friendships and relationships. If you can’t let them go at least set boundaries and limit your time with these people.

- Nurture a few quality relationships.
- Keep a gratitude journal. This will help you train your brain in looking for the positives in your life.
- Get a pet. Animals are a great source of unconditional love, acceptance, and joy!
- Take road trips. Even a short half hour to one hour road trip can provide a break from routine and give you a fresh perspective.
- Take a class. Instead of watching so much TV, spend some time learning something new. It will help you to become more engaged and will improve your life.
- Can’t go to the gym due to Covid? Take an online exercise class, dance in your living room, or walk around your neighborhood. Buy some weights and start a weight training routine at home. Keeping active is good for the mind, body, and soul.
- Make a list of the most common repetitive, negative thoughts you have. Now write positive reframes for those thoughts. When the negative loop begins replace with your positive reframe or affirmations.
- Eat at least one meal a day without any distractions. Eat mindfully and slowly and notices the textures, tastes, smells, and colors.
- Eliminate clutter around you. Donate items that you don’t use.
- Make a list of all the things that you make you happy or feed your soul and then schedule time for them on a regular basis.
