Many of my clients have been on every diet known to man and yet none of these diets have ultimately been successful in that they haven't been able to keep the weight off. That right there is proof that diets don't work yet many find themselves easily seduced back into the dieting cycle.
To
overcome the dieting cycle and move beyond dieting requires cultivating awareness, listening to your body and intuition, honoring your own rhythms, and moving beyond your comfort zone.
Dieting on the other hand is familiar. It doesn't require a lot of thought or awareness. An eating plan is laid out for you. Follow that and you will lose weight. It's that simple.
Unfortunately, the results don't last. At some point, you have to deal with the fact you've regained the weight and start dieting again. Dieting doesn't teach you how to change your relationship with yourself or food. It is based on following a set of external rules...eat this...not that. It doesn't address why you turn to food to cope with life.
Intuitive eating is eating according to your body's needs
and rhythms. You key into your own cues of hunger and satiety. You choose the foods that most agree with your body. You get to choose what foods you will eat for pleasure. You're in control of your relationship with food. It's all about your internal responses and needs. This scares a lot of people who are used to dieting. They don't trust themselves or their bodies.
It takes some time and work to regain this trust. It doesn't
happen overnight but it's such a gift when it does. It allows you to regain freedom around food and leave dieting behind forever.
This is my hope for everyone that I work with: freedom in their relationship with food.

Haley Stopped Binge Eating and Has Lost 18 Pounds So Far!
It’s been so great to have someone listen and help me identify the patterns that have been holding me back. The experience you have working with people in my situation allowed you to recognize my negative patterns when I was unable to see
what was causing my problems, and the self-care guidelines you’ve given me have helped my whole life, not just my weight. Also, having someone holding me accountable has been amazing, knowing that I have a check-in made me think twice about binging, and helped me stop my cycle of negativity. I’m so thankful for the time we’ve worked together.
I was finally able to recognize the underlying reasons I’m compelled to
binge eat. I used food as a source of comfort because I didn’t have other outlets for self-care, and have been holding myself to an impossible standard that nobody could ever live up to. I was caught in a cycle of self-loathing, and all my other weight loss efforts came from a place of hating my body rather than nurturing and loving myself.
I’ve recognized long held issues that I’ve had since childhood about
perfectionism, and I’ve been given tools to really listen to my body again, instead of bingeing through the point of being full, I’m able to stop and recognize that I’m full, and can always come back for more when I’m hungry again.
I’ve also started working out every day, even if it’s only 10-15 minutes – I’ve stopped
thinking everything needs to be 100% (60 minute workout or nothing!), and I’m just doing my best now! I’ve been really surprised at how much less challenging it is when you approach weight loss from a place of love rather than inadequacy. I’ve learned to accept myself right where I am! I no longer feel ashamed of myself for letting myself gain so much weight, and it doesn’t feel like an impossible task anymore to lose weight. I’ve recognized larger patterns that affect other areas of my life,
and I’ve been able to start nurturing the parts of my soul that were being neglected, which has given me improvement in my health and my mental status.
Therapy has given me coping mechanisms for dealing with the difficulty of life, but working with Catherine has helped me see the patterns of why I became overweight.
So far, I’ve lost 18lbs! I’m going for 60 to be back in a healthy weight range, but it doesn’t sound intimidating now!
