The other day I watched a news clip with the CEO of Weight Watchers apologizing to former clients and saying, “We got weight loss all wrong.” She went on to say that obesity is a
chronic condition and that many people who were part of the Weight Watchers program were made to feel like failures because they weren’t successful on it.
This is something I’ve been saying about Weight Watchers for years. The whole program was set up on failure. They needed you to fail so you would keep coming back repeatedly. Sure, like most diets, you’d lose some weight on it but the deeper issues about why you were turning to food
were never addressed, and of course the weight would creep back on and then you would have to join again.
Of course, now Weight Watchers is pushing drugs so now they are pushing the agenda that the drugs are the way to go, but are they?
I’m not against the drugs but they too aren’t a magic cure-all for obesity. New studies are appearing all
the time that show hundreds of people are suffering from major digestive issues because of these drugs. Also, you need to stay on the drug for the weight to stay off. Studies show only 1 in 6 people are able to maintain their results for a year after discontinuing the drugs. After 1 year, most people had regained over half the weight they lost on the drugs.
Now, there is new evidence that after a year of being on the drug, the body begins to develop a tolerance and adapt to the drug, making the weight loss stop, and people are beginning to regain the weight even while taking the drug.
So, what is the answer to all of this? What
I’ve always preached: change your relationship with food!
It’s human nature to want the softer, easier way but I believe there is none. If you want freedom around food and weight, you need to look at the reasons that you turn to food and learn new some new things like better coping skills, stress management, new ways to deal with your anxiety and emotions, and address the voids in your life that you fill with food. Also, it’s
important to learn to eat in a way that is mindful, delicious, and sustainable in the long run.
In other words, major lifestyle change. We have over 25 years of research that shows this is the way to affect lasting changes around food and weight. Of course, this takes some time and effort, and most people would rather pop a pill, get a shot, or have surgery, and not have to think about all this. But as time is beginning to show there
are no magic bullets, as much as we’d all like one.
So, if you’re thinking about going on another diet or cleanse in the New Year, give some thought about its long-term effects. This is only putting a temporary Band-Aid on the problem and soon, the weight will come back once again.
