Hello ,
Rigid, the skeleton of habit alone upholds the human frame.
— Virginia
Woolf
We are all creatures of habit. Our habits sustain us; they allow us to go about our daily routines with little thought or effort. Some of our habits are life affirming and others are self-destructive. Overeating and lack of exercise certainly fall into the latter category.
Habits are
created by frequent repetition of certain behaviors. Habits and routines are necessary but they can also be brain and spirit deadening. When we're in a rut, our habitual and often negative thought patterns and behaviors become entrenched and our energy and spirit becomes stagnant. On an energetic level, depression is nothing more than stagnant, stuck life energy. Movement is life and as humans, we are meant to be in motion.
Our brains thrive on novelty and change. That’s why travel and vacations are so wonderful. Everything is new and it helps give us a new perspective and fresh energy along with it. Unfortunately, most of us can’t go on a vacation anytime we feel like we need it.
Changing up our everyday routine in little ways can help revive our spirits
and boost our energy. Try taking a different route to work; try a new restaurant; explore a nearby park; take a workshop; or pretend to be a tourist and visit a place in your area you've never been to. Novelty challenges our brain and allows us to see life from a different perspective.
Personally, I enjoy changing up my routine on a weekly basis. Some mornings, I go to a beautiful outdoor
shopping center that has gorgeous fountains and gardens. I go very early, before the stores are open and there are few people around. At this hour, it's my private personal oasis and I sit there and drink my coffee, and listen to the soothing water sounds. Other days, I go for walks along the bay, or try different parks. I find that changing up my routine like this really helps to brighten my spirits and keeps me out of mental
ruts.
If you find that eating is your main way of being social with people, try planning some outings that don't involve food. Go for a walk; visit a museum; a botanical garden; go to a movie; or meet at a coffee shop. There are so many more options than going out for a meal.
If you’re in a food rut, pick some fruits and/or vegetables that are currently in season and learn a new recipe that features them. Challenge yourself to learn a couple new recipes a month. If you eat out for lunch every day, try preparing and bringing your lunch a few days a week instead. Food prepared at home tends to have less calories than food at restaurants.
If all you do is plop in front of the TV every night and eat, take one night a week and do something different. Try going to a lecture, a book club, an exercise class, a church, a meditation class, etc. You will meet some new people and engage your mind in fresh new ways. Also try various crafts while you're watching TV. I like to watercolor or do stitching while watching TV. My hands are busy so I'm not
eating.
We often think we need to make big sweeping changes in our lives, but the truth is by making small changes here and there we create openings for even bigger changes to come. Sometimes all we have to do is do one thing differently and we find that opens the door to a brand new life.
Think how different your life would be if you chose to go for a daily walk for an entire year. Or what if you chose to explore a new hobby or interest? Or you decided have a piece of fruit in the evening for a snack instead of your usual ice cream? What if you hired a personal trainer to create an exercise routine for yourself or joined a gym?
In what small ways
can I change up my daily routine?
